What the Hex?

I decided to further develop the pattern for What the Hex?  It was published in Quilter's Connection a few years ago but the pattern was very abbreviated.  Now there is a fulsome pattern available from my NoRulesQuilting Etsy store and also at Quilt Pattern Mart.  If you are looking at both these sites, you will notice a difference in the pricing.  It's Canadian Dollars on Etsy and US Dollars on Quilt Pattern Mart - that's why the difference.  In the end, it should work out to roughly the same.

Above is the pattern cover pix, which, if you have tracked my blog, you would have seen before - and at the moment it's also the "background" for my blog!

And then I made another one, to use up some fabric, but more importantly, to document a few things about making it, which appear on the "support page" - go to the What the Hex? tab on the home page here.

The hex/triangle combo is not new.  It's an ancient tile pattern and you have seen it in other quilts.  But I jazzed mine with these "empty" star spaced for some pretty awesome custom quilting.  And I've provided the templates for those fronds if you want to put them into your quilting.  And of course templates for the hexies and triangles if you don't have a special ruler.  And, as with all my patterns, step by step instructions with illustrations.

I have a third one made, but not quilted so it will get a separate post in the future.

Photo Shoot!

I organized a "Quilt Photo Shoot Day" for the Calgary Modern Quilt Guild with professional photographer, Adina Johnson.  We had the shoot at Adina's home last Saturday.  I couldn't resist taking some (five) of my favourite quilts to have photographed.  Here are the pix by Adina.

"Tequila Sunrise" - a Judy Niemeyer Glacier Star pattern. 90"*90" version. Blogged about it here.

"What the Hex" - my own pattern, although the design is ancient!  Blogged about it here.

"Key Lime Galaxy" - my own pattern and design.  I blogged about it here.

"Stella Venandi" - I couldn't think of a name so I found the Latin translation of  "Hunter Star".  This is one of the Hunter Star layouts in Deb Tucker's Hidden Treasures book.  I blogged about it here.

"Big Bang" - my own design and pattern  Who else would do something this nuts?  😀 Blogged about it here.

Heritage Park Festival of Quilts - 2016!

I had a fabulous weekend at the HP FoQ!!!  So much fun talking and geeking out with so many quilty friends!  I had a number of my own quilts in the show and I am really pumped by the number of my customers' quilts that I quilted that were also in the show.  There were just so many really fabulous quilts - hundreds of them!

These are my own quilts (look at previous posts for close ups of the quilting detail on all of the following quilts):

"Read All Over"  [pattern is a Susan Madu "Strip and Flip"]

"Rainbow Connection" [based on the "Burst Block" by Man Sewing]

"What the Hex" [no pattern]

"Patchwork City" [pattern by Elizabeth Hartman]

"Draco Ostium" [unknown artist did the initial drawing]

Here are some customer quilts:

The first three are part of a Susan Madu "Strip and Flip" design group entry.  I quilted these three.  The first one is Susan's and she used it as the cover for her pattern [look for Modern Blended Quilts].  The next two were made by her friend Armiel, who was testing the pattern.

Next up is Rachel's "Gravity Quilt".  We were both pretty excited that it got the prime display spot in the park!  Front and centre on the Wainright Hotel!  Both days!

Next three, below: Agnes's "IKEA Rug".

Below: Agnes's "Bright Birch Trees"

Next three below: Jodi's "Square in Square" - two of them - blue and pink.

Next three below: another Susan Madu Modern Blended Quilts - "Rail in Rail"  - again this one is the cover for her pattern.

Finally - another of Agnes's quilts - Hexies.

What the Hex?

Still chipping my way through my fabric stash - this is the product of another bundle of fat quarters I picked up at the Lethbridge Quilt Canada show.  I wanted to try my new Jaybird Hex N More ruler.  So I cut the max number of 6 inch (finished) hexies from each FQ, then added some other fabric to make up the difference for a 60"*72" quilt.  I left some white space for doing some fun quilting.  Experimenting with technique for wholecloth quilt.  I'm pretty happy with the way it all turned out.
