Whirlygig! A New Quilt Pattern

Whirlygig!

This is a brand new quilt pattern that I recently published to my No Rules Quilting Etsy shop
Finished size: 65" x 86"

Whirlygig was designed for the Calgary Modern Quilt Guild's submission to the QuiltCon 2026 Community Quilt Challenge. The Modern Quilt Guild (CMQG's "Mothership" ) specified size, two colour palettes and the theme of medallion. The guild selected the blue palette. I remembered some oh-so-cool wind driven metal art we saw years ago in Seattle and that was my inspiration for the "whirling" that begins near the centre of the quilt.

The quilt is made up of 10 sections and most sections have subsections. Each section is explained and illustrated so that assembling the quilt is actually very straight forward.

The implication of a "community quilt" is that it is to be made by community and shared in the community. The quilt in the photo was made by about 20 guild members. First the quilt was cut. Then the Pieced Blocks were made and collected. The Pieced Blocks and Plain Blocks were packaged into kits so that each person could complete a section or subsection. The sections/subsection were collected and the quilt was fully assembled at our fall retreat. Then one of the guild long-armers, Karin, quilted the quilt.
The pattern cover quilt was displayed at QuiltCon 2026, Feb 19 to 22, 2026. Once it is returned to the guild, our Outreach Coordinator will find an appropriate home for it in the community.
This is the first quilt I have designed and not made for the pattern cover. However, I'm super happy with the way it went together. My testers indicated that they had no problems with the pattern and that everything went together as it should. Having said that, they all had suggestions to improve the pattern, which I incorporated into the final version. Thanks to my testers!
I will get to making my own Whirlygig, soon, I hope!

(Sorry about the weird formatting, I can't seem to get rid of it.)
